More than 350 industry leaders, researchers, manufacturers, suppliers, startups, workforce organizations, investors and government partners gathered in Rochester on June 1-2 for the NY SMART I-Corridor Semiconductor Summit.
Over two days of presentations, panel discussions, Lightning Talks, matchmaking meetings and networking opportunities, one message came through clearly: New York’s semiconductor ecosystem continues to grow stronger.
Here are five key takeaways from the inaugural NY SMART I-Corridor Semiconductor Summit.
1. Manufacturers have an immediate need for suppliers
The Supply Chain Exchange highlighted the level of opportunity available to regional suppliers.
Companies such as GlobalFoundries, Edwards Vacuum and Universal Instruments, among others, discussed their purchasing needs and met directly with potential suppliers from across the corridor. They are actively looking for partners to supply:
- Bulk chemicals and industrial gases
- Logistics and warehousing services
- Sheet metal fabrication and machined parts
- Robotics, automation, and motion control systems
- Electronic components, PCB fabrication, and connectors
- Electrical systems, sensors, and industrial controls
- Advanced materials, sealing technologies, and thermal management solutions
For businesses looking to enter or expand within the semiconductor industry, the opportunities are no longer theoretical. Companies are actively looking for suppliers and partners.

2. New York’s research pipeline is producing real opportunities
The Innovation Expo showcased technologies and ideas from startups, universities, and research organizations across the corridor. Participating organizations included AIXTRON, Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, the University at Buffalo, TOPTICA Photonics, TunaBotics, Nicslab, Era73 Technologies, and others.
Highlighted innovations included:
- Photonics and integrated chip design
- Advanced materials and semiconductor devices
- Robotics and automation
- Testing, measurement, and instrumentation
- Extended reality and digital technologies
- Battery and energy technologies
- Semiconductor manufacturing processes and equipment
Just as important, many of the conversations focused on commercialization: advancing technologies from prototypes to products through university-industry partnerships, startup growth, and technology transfer.
To date, the Commercialization and Collaboration Center (C3) has deployed $1.2 million across 14 innovation vouchers to help companies accelerate product development, commercialization, and industry collaboration across the corridor.

3. Workforce remains top of mind
Nearly every conversation about growth eventually came back to people.
As semiconductor investments continue across New York, employers, educators and workforce organizations are all focused on how to build the talent pipeline needed to support future demand. The discussion has moved beyond identifying the challenge and toward developing practical solutions and partnerships.

4. The ecosystem is getting more connected
Not long ago, many of the people in the room may not have known each other. Today, manufacturers, startups, researchers, workforce organizations, investors, and economic development partners are increasingly finding ways to work together.
The summit itself reflected this growing connectivity. Researchers shared the stage with manufacturers. Startups presented alongside established companies. The Innovation Expo connected innovators with industry partners, while the Supply Chain Exchange brought manufacturers and suppliers together for one-on-one conversations and matchmaking meetings.
That was visible throughout the summit. Conversations moved easily between research, manufacturing, workforce development, and supply chain opportunities because the connections between those areas are becoming stronger.
5. Momentum is building across the corridor
Perhaps the biggest takeaway was the sense of momentum.
Across Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Ithaca, organizations are making investments, launching new initiatives, building partnerships and finding new ways to support the industry’s growth.
That momentum is already visible across the corridor. Through the Supply Chain Activation Network (SCAN), companies are receiving technical assistance and support to pursue semiconductor opportunities. Through the Commercialization and Collaboration Center (C3), more than $870,000 in innovation vouchers has been deployed to support commercialization and technology development. Through STEP UP, companies and training partners are working together to strengthen the talent pipeline across the corridor.
The summit brought many of these efforts together in one place and offered a reminder that the growth happening across the corridor is not theoretical. It is already underway.
